What If Networking Felt Like a Hug?

Why Women Are Craving Connection Over Performance—And How We’re Redefining Networking at The Nova

By Melissa Bauknight, Founder of The Nova Global

I still remember the last traditional networking event I attended.

It was at a downtown co-working space—polished, on-brand, filled with friendly faces and strong coffee. I had my elevator pitch rehearsed, my business cards stacked neatly in my bag, and my best “I’ve got it all together” smile ready.

But fifteen minutes in, something felt off.

I didn’t feel connected. I felt like I was performing.

It wasn’t that the women weren’t brilliant—they were. It was the energy. Surface-level. Transactional. Everyone there to be impressive, not necessarily to be real.

I left early. Not because I didn’t want to connect, but because I deeply did.
And I knew there had to be a better way.

Why Traditional Networking Leaves Us Empty

If you’ve ever walked away from a networking event feeling lonelier than when you arrived, you’re not alone. So many high-achieving, soul-led women are quietly burnt out on performative spaces that ask them to shrink their brilliance into a tagline.

We’re tired of rooms that prioritize what you do over who you are.

We’re done with the pressure to perfect our pitch, hide our hearts, and put success on display like armor. Because the truth is: success without connection feels hollow.

What we’re longing for are spaces that feel human. Spaces that feel like us.

Introducing: The Nova Connection Call

This is why we created The Nova Connection Call—a free virtual networking call for women who are ready for a more authentic way to connect.

Held on the third Thursday of every month at 12 PM MST, this call is more than a Zoom room. It’s a curated space for ambitious women to meet, exhale, and be seen—not for their title, but for their truth.

No breakout room awkwardness.
No elevator pitches.
Just real conversations, grounded reflection, and soul-deep connection.

Why It Works: Connection Over Competition

For over two years, women have been gathering in this virtual circle to speak from the heart and connect beyond roles or résumés. Each month has a theme rooted in values-aligned leadership—and this month’s focus is Inclusive Leadership.

We’ll explore how to lead with equity, empathy, and intentional belonging—and how to create environments where everyone feels truly welcome.

You’ll meet women who are building businesses, navigating corporate leadership, raising families, launching creative projects, and doing it all with heart. You’ll leave not just with inspiration, but with new connections that actually feel like community.

This Is Relational Business

This isn’t networking as usual—it’s relational business in action.

Because when you strip away the polish and lead with presence, everything shifts. Opportunities flow from trust. Collaboration comes from connection. And your business becomes an extension of your values, not a performance of your worth.

This is what networking should feel like.
This is what leadership can feel like.
Supportive. Grounded. Transformational.
