From Control to Trust: How I’m Learning to Lead Differently

By Melissa Bauknight

There’s a version of me that believed leadership meant holding everything together—keeping the trains running, the team humming, and the surface looking polished. And for a long time, I did that well. I hit the goals. I managed the teams. I made it all happen. But eventually, I realized that control wasn’t leadership—it was survival.

Cracking Open Through Nova

Building The Nova has changed me in ways I didn’t expect. I didn’t just launch a business—I stepped into a new way of being. One where I had to let go of control, perfection, and the illusion of certainty. I had to live the very work I was teaching, in real-time, with thousands of people watching.

This past year especially, has invited me into a deeper relationship with trust—trusting my body, the women around me, the mission, and perhaps most of all, trusting that my worth isn’t tied to how much I hold, fix, or prove. It’s been a profound shift into authentic leadership for women, one rooted in self-trust rather than self-sacrifice.

There were moments, like after KC Baker and I taught the Brave Masterclass to over 100 women, when I found myself sobbing on the phone to Whitney, overwhelmed by what it means to truly be seen. Not as a founder or a polished leader, but as a woman doing tender, sacred, brave work while also navigating a marriage, motherhood, financial uncertainty, hormone shifts, and the quiet ache of asking:

Can I really hold all of this?

And the answer has been yes, but never alone. The shift has been from being the one who “has it all together” to being the one who lets herself be held, too. From leading through performance to leading through presence.

Redefining Authentic Leadership for Women

When I reflect on what we’ve created inside The Nova in just 18 months—new chapters launching across the country, a growing team, our own app, and the emergence of a bold new business tier—I don’t see control. I see collaboration. I see trust. I see a woman (me) remembering who she is in real-time.

This isn’t the model of leadership I learned in my corporate career. It’s not always slower—let’s be honest, I’m still a Manifesting Generator who wants everything yesterday and all at once (working on that). But I’ve learned to hold softer deadlines, to trust the process, and to leave room for recalibration and magic along the way.

It’s built on alignment, not just achievement. It’s forged in community, not isolation. And it’s required me to stay close to the tools that truly support me: nervous system care, deep relationships, ceremonial spaces, the wisdom of my therapist, and yes—even the gift of medication when needed.

Reclaiming My Power

I’ve had to unlearn the idea that rest and stability must be earned. I’ve had to remember that I’m still the woman who built a top 1% business, who led high-performing teams, and who could make something out of nothing with just a spreadsheet and a vision. But now, I get to lead with softness. With truth. With trust.

If you’re in your own season of shifting—unhooking from the pressure to perform or prove—I want you to know: you’re not alone. This is the future of leadership. This is what authentic leadership for women looks like. And it’s being built day by day in rooms like ours.
